Bag Types We Produce
Backpacks
Our most requested bag format. Roll-top, flap-over and zip-closure constructions, with padded laptop sleeves up to 16". The engineering points that matter are strap anchoring — where the shoulder strap meets the body is the highest-stress junction in the whole bag — and back panel construction, which determines whether it is comfortable when loaded.
Weekender duffels
Cylindrical or barrel-form travel bags, typically 45–55 cm. The cost drivers are the main zip — length and quality — and the base construction. A duffel carries its load on the base and the handle anchor points, so a reinforced base panel and riveted handle mounts are not optional if the bag is meant to last.
Purses and small bags
Coin purses, pouches and small crossbody formats. Lower material cost, and the lowest entry point in our bag range — from $7.50 per piece at from 50 pieces.
Totes, briefcases and messenger bags
Produced to order rather than held as catalogue stock. If you have a tech pack for a tote, laptop bag, briefcase or messenger, send it — these are standard constructions for our units, they simply are not lines we hold ready-made options for. Quote through the quote request form.
Leather Options, Linings & Hardware
Leather weight
This is the first decision and it determines the character of the finished bag more than the finish does.

Many bags use two weights: a heavier leather for the base, straps and stress panels, lighter for the body. It costs more to cut and nest but produces a bag that behaves properly.
Finishes
Available across our hide range: Aniline, Embossed, Nubuck, Pebble, Pull-Up, Semi-Aniline, Smooth, Suede, Veg Tan, in cowhide, goat, buffalo and sheep. For bags specifically:
- Pull-up — lightens at flex points and corners. Reads as rugged and lived-in; hides wear naturally.
- Pebble — textured grain disguises scuffs better than any other finish. The pragmatic choice for a bag that will be used hard.
- Aniline — richest depth and patina, but shows every mark. Right for heritage brands, wrong for a commuter bag sold on durability.
- Semi-aniline — the compromise most bag brands land on.
Linings
- Cotton canvas — durable, breathable, economical. The default.
- Polyester twill — cheapest, water resistant, wipes clean.
- Suede or pigskin — premium, and noticeably better in the hand when the bag is opened.
- Unlined — for veg-tan bags where the interior leather is the point.
Hardware
Not the leather — the hardware and its anchoring. A zip that separates, a D-ring that pulls out, plating that wears through in six months. Specify solid brass or stainless over plated zinc alloy for load-bearing fittings, and specify how hardware is anchored: riveted through a reinforced patch, or box-stitched with bar tacks. Two bags with identical spec sheets can differ entirely on this point.
- Zips — YKK is the benchmark. Excella for premium, standard YKK for most work. Generic zips are the most common false economy in bag manufacturing.
- Finishes — antique brass, nickel, gunmetal, matte black.
- Custom hardware — branded buckles, engraved plates and custom zip pulls are available with a one-off mould or die cost on the first order.
- Magnetic and turn-lock closures, D-rings, swivel clips, rivets and feet — all specified per design.

What moves the unit cost
- Panel count — more panels means more cutting, skiving and stitching.
- Two-leather construction — better bag, more nesting waste.
- Custom hardware — increase plus one-off tooling.
- Zip length and quality — a full-perimeter Excella zip is a real line item.
- Internal organisation — each pocket, sleeve and divider is an assembly step.
- Quantity — bands down meaningfully, more so than on small goods.
Design Services, Tech Packs & Sampling
What a usable tech pack contains
- Dimensions — height, width, depth, in mm, with tolerance.
- Flat technical drawings — front, back, side, interior.
- Leather specification — animal, grade, thickness range, finish, colour reference.
- Hardware schedule — every fitting with material, finish and size.
- Lining and interior layout — pocket positions and dimensions.
- Stitching — thread colour, stitches per inch, where bar tacks go.
- Branding — logo placement, method, size.
- Packaging — dust bag, box, labels.
No tech pack? Send a reference bag, or photographs with measurements and written notes on what you want changed. We pattern from physical references regularly, and for many clients that is a faster route than commissioning technical drawings first.
Sampling
Bag sampling runs 14–20 days — longer than small leather goods because patterns have to be cut, trialled and corrected. Most bag programmes need two sample rounds. Build that into your timeline rather than treating it as slippage; a bag approved on the first sample is the exception, not the target.

A first bag programme realistically runs four to five months from first contact to delivered stock. Repeat orders on an approved pattern run 8–10 weeks. Anyone promising a first bag order in six weeks is either skipping sampling or not telling you about the revision round.
Design Mistakes We See Repeatedly
Most bag programmes that fail do so for reasons visible at tech pack stage. These are the ones we flag most often:
- Leather too light for the construction
A structured bag drawn in 1.2mm leather will collapse. The drawings look right and the finished bag does not stand up. If the design needs to hold shape empty, it needs 1.8mm or a stiffener.
- Straps attached to unreinforced panels
The most common outright failure. A shoulder strap carrying 8kg through a single layer of leather will tear out. Strap anchors need a reinforcement patch, riveting or bar tacking — ideally all three.
- Zips specified by length but not by quality
"320mm zip" tells the factory nothing about whether it survives two years. Specify the brand and gauge.
- Too many internal pockets
Each pocket is an assembly step and a cost. Pockets also stiffen the bag body in ways that are rarely intended. Three well-placed pockets beat seven.
- Ignoring the base
The base takes the entire load whenever the bag is set down. A base without reinforcement or feet abrades through first, and it is the part customers photograph in negative reviews.
- Hardware finish chosen without checking the base metal
Antique brass plating over zinc alloy and solid antique brass look identical on day one. One of them still looks that way in a year.
Leather Treatment & Water Resistance
Leather is not waterproof, and overstating this in your listing generates returns. What is available:
- Water-repellent finish — applied at the tanning stage. Resists light rain and spills; not waterproof, and the distinction matters legally as well as commercially.
- Waxed / pull-up leathers — naturally more water resistant because of oil and wax content. They also mark and lighten, which is either the aesthetic or a problem depending on your brand.
- Waterproof membrane lining — for bags that genuinely need it. Effectively a second bag inside the first, and priced accordingly.
- Sealed seams — needed for any real waterproof claim. Without them the membrane is decorative.
Our recommendation for most brands: specify a water-repellent finish, describe it accurately as water-resistant, and include a care card. Overclaiming waterproofing is one of the reliable ways to accumulate poor reviews.
Care instructions worth including
A printed care card costs very little and measurably reduces "it got damaged" complaints. The essentials: keep away from prolonged direct sun and heat, blot rather than rub when wet and air-dry away from radiators, condition a few times a year, expect aniline and pull-up finishes to develop patina and lighten at flex points. That last line reframes a support ticket as a feature.
Quality Control
Every batch passes six-stage inspection — material intake, cutting, stitching, assembly, finishing and pre-shipment — measured against the archived approved sample. For bags we pay particular attention to:
- Stress-point integrity — strap anchors, handle mounts, D-ring attachments.
- Zip operation under load, not just empty.
- Symmetry — panel alignment and pocket positioning left to right.
- Edge finish consistency around the full perimeter.
- Colour consistency across panels cut from different hides.
That last point is worth expanding: leather is natural, and panels cut from different hides vary slightly. On a multi-panel bag this is visible. We nest panels for a single bag from the same hide wherever the pattern allows — a step that costs material yield and is quietly skipped by factories quoting on price alone.
Packaging & Presentation
Bags are high-value items and packaging carries proportionally more weight than it does on small leather goods. It is also a real freight cost, because a boxed bag occupies substantially more volume than a bagged one.
- Dust bag — cotton or non-woven, printed or plain. Effectively standard on leather bags above entry price, and cheap relative to its effect on unboxing.
- Stuffing — bags must ship stuffed to hold shape. Unstuffed leather bags arrive creased and the crease can be permanent.
- Hardware protection — buckles and zip pulls wrapped so they do not scuff the leather in transit.
- Retail box — the strongest presentation and the largest cost, in both materials and freight volume.
- Care card and authenticity insert — low cost, and it measurably reduces avoidable complaints.
Decide packaging before production. It changes carton dimensions, which changes how many units fit a container, which changes freight per unit — occasionally by more than the packaging itself costs.
